Postcards from India Issue 14 | What is Slow Fashion?
Slow Fashion ~ Where every garment has a story, and every story is worth telling.
Slowly and ethically handcrafted garments embody sustainability, mindfulness, and innate creativity. Ethically crafted with love, they breathe a philosophy that embraces quality over quantity, and timeless style rather than fleeting trends.
At its heart, slow fashion is about creating garments that tell a story—of the people who make them, the traditions they uphold, and the communities they support.

Slow fashion is inherently sustainable, and therefore our gift to a greener future. Through prioritising quality over quantity, we reduce the demand for constant newness that often drives the fashion industry. Our garments are designed to last, minimising waste and the environmental impact of production. Furthermore, we are committed to ethical practices—ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for the artisans' rights. This holistic approach benefits not only the environment but also the people who are integral to the industry.
By embracing timeless style, our slow fashion garments are designed to be versatile, enduring, and adaptable to various occasions. They are not bound by the pressures of seasonal collections, rather they offer a lasting appeal that transcends time. By choosing slow fashion, we are investing in pieces that remain relevant and cherished for years to come.
One of the core slow fashion practices Daughters of India supports is hand block printing the fabrics from which our garments are crafted. This ancient technique, that has been passed down through generations, involves the meticulous carving of intricate designs into wooden blocks. Each block is then dipped in natural dyes and pressed onto fabric, creating unique, vibrant patterns that are impossible to be replicated by machines. Hand block printed garments carry with them the very essence of true craftsmanship and a reflection of the artisans own individuality. They are also a testament to traditional methods of creation, with the use of human hands to craft, sunshine to dry the fabrics, and rainwater to wash them.
All of our garments have always been and always will be handcrafted using slow fashion practices. Handmade garments are the epitome of slow fashion. They are crafted with care, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality. Each piece is a labour of love, reflecting the hands and hearts of the artisans who create them. By investing in handmade garments, we are making a conscious choice to value the effort and time that goes into each creation. We are also contributing to the survival of these time-honoured practices, ensuring that they are not lost in the tides of mass production.
Every garment we produce has a story. It is the story of the artisan who hand-carved the block for printing, the weaver who spent hours at the loom, and the community that upholds these traditions. It is a story of heritage, culture, and resilience. By wearing our garments, you become part of this story—honouring the past, supporting the present, and shaping a sustainable future.

Slow fashion is a movement of remembering the heart of handmade garments, the preservation of traditional methods, and the promotion of ethical and sustainable practices. It is a reminder to be mindful of our choices, to appreciate the craftsmanship behind our clothes, and to support a fashion industry that values people and the planet. As we continue on this journey, we invite you to join us in embracing slow fashion—not just as a trend, but as a way of life.
With love, Daughters of India x
